RIDE-IN AND RIDE-OUT ROUTES

Recommendations for independent rides

KAROLINA ROAD

Karolina is a historic route that connected Karlovac and Rijeka through Fužine and Mrkopalj; built in 1726–1732 and about 105 km long. Designed by Matija Weiss for Emperor Charles VI, it was chosen as the shortest, but demanding route full of sharp bends, steep slopes and narrow passages. Once crowded with carriages, mules and bandits, today it attracts motorists for its combination of technical bends, mountain views and historical remains: the stone bridge in Novigrad on the Dobra, the viaduct in Brestova Draga and the obelisk in Rijeka. Parts of the route serve local traffic, and a modern motorway runs parallel. Paved and adapted between 1975 and 1978, Karolina also offers accommodation for the ride—demanding sectors and quieter historical sections ideal for tours, photos and short stops. Plan for a slower, technical ride and respect the narrow sections.

JOSEPHINA ROAD

Joseph's Road is a historic road connecting Karlovac and Senj, created after Emperor Joseph II fell from his horse on Kapela and ordered a better road. Built in 1770–1779, about 100 km long, it crosses Kapela at 888 m. Modified in 1833–1845 to avoid steep sections and extended by 12 km. It was designed by Vinko Struppi; the works were organized by the military with civilian crews, with an average width of about 5 m; the construction involved blasting, reportedly 25 tons of gunpowder. The workers built an average of about 30 km per year; 220 road workers were hired for maintenance, clearing snow in the winter. The route is still in use today and was paved in the second half of the 20th century. For motorcyclists: expect mountain passes, tight technical bends, steep descents and variable surfaces from smooth asphalt to patches. Features: obelisk in Karlovac, Great Gate in Senj, old bridges and landmarks. Drive carefully, plan fuel and breaks, enjoy the panorama and historical atmosphere.

LOUISIANA ROAD

The Louisiana, also known as the Rijeka Highway, is a 136 km long historic road connecting Karlovac and Rijeka; built between 1803 and 1811. Extremely wide for its time, averaging 8 m (up to 14 m in sharp bends), it was designed by Filip Vukasović. The route passes through Grobničko Polje, Delnice, Skrad and reaches the highest pass at around 800 m. The construction was difficult: mining, wars, a lack of manpower and poorly paid workers. Made of stone blocks to prevent hooves from slipping, it served for almost two centuries and was asphalted in the 1960s; the highway today uses its best sections. For motorcyclists: expect long open roads, wide bends and fast mountain passes that the builders imagined for horse-drawn carriages; some sections are technically demanding through canyons and ravines. Be careful of the changing surfaces and be prepared for long stages; The view of the sea and the mountains makes the route worth every trip.

RUDOLFINA ROAD

Rudolfina is the shortest historical route from Ogulin to the Adriatic Sea, ending in Novi Vinodolski. Built in the 19th century with the great contribution of Ban Ivan Mažuranić, it is named after the son of Emperor Franz Joseph I. It was completely paved in the 2000s due to its traffic and tourist importance. The route leads past Klek, through Velika Kapela, along the Bijela and Samarske stijene reserves, and then descends towards the coast.

For motorcyclists: expect a compact and varied ride — winding mountain sections, fast descents, and narrow, scenic slopes. The road is mostly paved, but there may be patches and gravel along the edges near protected areas; be careful of wildlife, loose rocks, and tourist traffic. Fuel and service stations are scarce between Ogulin and Novi Vinodolski, so plan to stop for breaks. Ideal for a half-day technical tour or a relaxed finish by the sea, Rudolfina rewards thoughtful riding with dramatic views and a touch of Croatian road history.

THERESIANA ROAD

Theresian Road is a historic road built in 1786 to connect Gospić and Karlobag over the Oštarijska vrata pass (928 m), by order of Emperor Joseph II. It is named after Maria Theresa, and its construction was led by engineer Filip Vukasović. Part of the route was entered into the Register of Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Croatia in 2007. The route offers mountain climbs and technical bends, sharp views of Velebit and the Adriatic, and a mix of historical construction and untouched nature. The Velebit Nature Park has arranged a hiking educational trail on part of Theresian Road (Baške Oštarije – Konjsko, 3 km), intended exclusively for pedestrians. For motorcyclists: expect demanding narrow sections, variable surfaces and possible narrow stone sections; services and fuel are rare, so plan supplies and breaks. Ride at an appropriate speed, count on the wind and changing weather, and take advantage of the panoramas and historical charm for photos and peaceful stops.

MASTER'S ROAD

The Master's Road is a ~40 km long Velebit route from Sveti Rok via Mali Alan to Obrovac, built in 1825–1832 under the leadership of Josip Kajetan Knežić; the name comes from the German meisterstück — masterpiece. Due to its exceptional architectural value, it was included in the Register of Cultural Heritage in 2007.

For motorcyclists: expect gravel and technical sections that reward skilled riding with panoramic views; the route is not a fast highway but a demanding, somewhat rough terrain with cut-in studs, rocky crossings, and open views of Velebit and the sea. The surface is passable for a regular motorbike, but prepare tires, suspension, and a lower gear for safety. Plan on fuel and tools — service stations are rare. The best time is dry, in the morning or late afternoon due to the light and less traffic. The ride requires focus and respect for the local nature; photo stops and admiring the panorama make the journey worthwhile.

CASTLES OF ZAGORJE

A one-day tour through the castles of Hrvatsko Zagorje designed for cruiser and touring groups: early departure from Zagreb, the road is mostly winding and the asphalt is great for long lines and gentle inclines. Schedule: Marija Bistrica for a short stop and fuel, Trakošćan Castle for a photo stop and sightseeing, Veliki Tabor as the main break for lunch and a walk, a short espresso in Krapina, return via Hum na Sutli. The route is 270–320 km depending on the variant; count on several photo stops and one longer break for a meal.

For motorcyclists: ride in a group with clear rules for queuing, keep safe distances, and adjust your speed to road conditions. Bring basic tools, water, and a spare fuel; parking at castles can be limited. The best time is early spring to late fall; avoid peak weekend times during the tourist season. The route rewards slow riding — the panoramas, architecture, and good coffee make the day complete.
